Two notes:

1. On the length and timing of terms.

In the early years of the Section, officer elections were held at the Fall (October or November) Meetings.  The Monthly described the slate of officers as being "elected for the coming year."  There was no meeting in Fall 1942, although one had been planned.  Instead, the report from the April 1943 meeting states that "the present officers were reelected for another term."  We know that no Section Meeting was held after this until November 1947, so it is not exactly clear what happened with the officers during the War years.  At some point shortly after the war, the Section switched its elections to the Spring Meeting and moved to two-year terms for all the officers.  In the late 1960s it appears that the Section began staggering the terms of the members of the Executive Committee, and these positions soon became First and Second Vice-Chairman.

2. On "Chairman" vs. "Chair"

Since the creation of the Section, the highest leadership position was known as "Chairman" for many years.  In the 1970s, the positions of First Vice-Chairman and Second Vice-Chairman were added, and in the 1980s the positions of Chairman-Elect and Past Chairman became official.  It was not until 1999 that the Section proposed changes to the bylaws that replaced all occurrences of the word "Chairman" with the gender-neutral term "Chair".  The MAA Board of Governors approved these changes in January 2000.  Section Newsletters, however, use the term "Chair" in lists of officers beginning in October 1988, so we have used the word "Chair" in this officer list beginning with the year 1988-1989.
