Mastery Grading in Introductory Mathematics Classes, Whitney Liske, Saint Vincent College
In this workshop, we will discuss some philosophies behind mastery (and standards) based grading. We will introduce different ways to implement this grading system, with a special focus on introductory classes. We will discuss details about how to write learning objectives and communicate grades with students throughout the semester. There will be some time at the end of the workshop to form working groups and create a draft of learning objectives for one of your introductory courses.
From Pi to Poetry: How to Survive Teaching Outside Your Comfort Zone, Jared Burns, Seton Hill University
Ever found yourself trying to teach literary analysis or the principles of economics when your heart beats for differential equations? Welcome to the wild world of teaching outside your PhD specialization! This talk is designed to empower new faculty in mathematics to confidently step outside their specialized training and embrace teaching across the curriculum. Whether it's teaching a mathematical subject you've never studied yourself, teaching a course for non-math majors, or teaching in the liberal arts - we’ll explore how to leverage your mathematical mindset in courses far afield from your expertise, connect with students from diverse disciplines, and even find joy in the unexpected. This session will equip you with strategies to make the unfamiliar manageable and fun. Get ready for an academic adventure that crosses both academic quadrants and content boundaries, where every course is an opportunity to inspire and be inspired!
Lightning Talks:
All participants are invited to present for 10-15 min. It could be an activity, an explanation, an app that is making life easier, a new way of grading... whatever you'd like to share! You can sign up to participate when you register.
